Hopefully, there will be at least one altar server at each Mass. However, we know that that is not always the case. At those times, it would be most helpful if one of the Eucharistic Ministers could serve in that capacity. Here is all you have to do.
Immediately Following the Prayer of the Faithful
- The priest or deacon will stand by the altar.
- First, bring the Chalice and any ciboria from the credence table and hand them to the priest or deacon. Return to the credence table.
- Next, bring the water and wine. Hand the wine to the priest or deacon first. He will pour some in the chalice and hand it back to you. Next, hand him the water. He will pour that into the chalice and hand it back to you. Return them to the credence table.
- Finally, place the towel over your arm and carry the pitcher and dish to the priest for the washing of hands. Just wait by the altar until the priest motions for you to serve him. After he is through, return those items to the credence table and go back to your place.
Immediately Following Communion
- After the ciboria have been placed in the tabernacle and the tabernacle door closed, go to the credence table and bring the cruet of water to the priest or deacon. He will use that to purify the chalice and, perhaps, other vessels.
- Continue to assist him by remaining available to carry the water and the other vessels back to the credence table.
